Vietnam 3-Star Hotel Exterior Lighting Design

Project Overview
Illus Lighting was commissioned to design the exterior lighting for a 3-star hotel in Vietnam. As a hospitality lighting project, the goal was to enhance the hotel’s nighttime presence, emphasize architectural features, deliver a warm and welcoming outdoor atmosphere, and ensure energy efficiency and durability.
Since hotels operate heavily at night, their lighting systems are critical—not just for illumination, but for shaping psychological and visual experiences. High-quality lighting improves comfort, safety, and impression for both guests and staff.
Design Philosophy & Approach
Lighting as Spatial Storytelling
In the planning phase, we placed great emphasis on thoroughly understanding the client’s and property owner’s needs. Through a tailored approach, we aimed to integrate light and shadow elegantly to transform the façade into a living canvas. Our creative leadership centered on capturing the architectural character of the building and expressing it through light to create a cozy, refined exterior ambience.
Warm Color Temperature (3000K)
We selected a warm 3000K color temperature across the exterior lighting scheme. This choice helps lend the building a friendly, inviting glow while enhancing the classical European style of the architecture. The warmer tones bring out detailing in façade materials and create a sense of hospitality.
Green & Energy-Aware Lighting
All luminaires use LED light sources to minimize energy consumption. Moreover, we only illuminated areas that required emphasis, avoiding wasteful over-lighting. This “right light in the right place” principle helps reduce light pollution and supports sustainable operation over the long term.
Safety, Durability & Environmental Care
We insisted on using reliable fixtures and materials, securely fixed in place to withstand weather and wear. Protection levels and optical control were carefully considered to prevent stray light or glare. Every system was designed with energy conservation, light pollution control, and long-term maintenance in mind.
Lighting Strategy & Zoning
We divided the exterior into a hierarchy of zones and tailored lighting treatments accordingly:
- Hotel Rooftop & Upper Façade
The rooftop structure and upper elevations were highlighted with wash lighting to accentuate the building’s scale and improve its nighttime visibility. By gently “washing” these surfaces, we created a bold, distinct silhouette that helps guests and passersby recognize the hotel in its context.
- Façade & Side Elevations (along the street)
The street-facing façades are a focal zone. These surfaces receive more pronounced lighting, with even and eye-catching illumination to draw attention. Architectural features—pilasters, cornices, window surrounds—were emphasized to lend depth and texture at night.
- Ground Level, Entrance & Lobby Frontage
At the base level, including the entrance and pedestrian approach, lighting was more detailed and intimate. Accent uplighting, carefully aimed spotlights, and subtle wall washing highlight material transitions, canopies, columns, and signage. The aim was a warm, inviting experience as guests arrive.
Selected Fixtures & Technical Highlights
Below are examples of the fixture types used:

These high-precision fixtures provide tight beam control, enabling us to highlight features while avoiding spill light onto adjacent zones. All fixtures were selected for outdoor durability and low maintenance.
Additionally, the hotel’s pool area received custom ambient lighting to enhance the nighttime appeal and reflect light beautifully on water surfaces, complementing the main building lighting without overpowering it.
Results & Highlights
- The hotel now radiates a strong, memorable presence after dusk, with a balanced interplay of light and shadow that accentuates architectural character.
- Warm 3000K tones create a comfortable and approachable feel, enhancing guest perception even before entering the building.
- LED fixtures and selective lighting zones help keep energy usage and operating costs under control.
- Thoughtful fixture placement and optical control reduce light pollution and neighbor impact.
- The lighting scheme reinforces brand identity for a mid-scale hotel by conveying care, professionalism, and warmth.
